After the wildly successful Patti pies were released last Thanksgiving and the viral video by James Wright Chanel, Patti Labelle will now add vanilla pound cake and a three-layer caramel cake to her dessert line at Walmart.
The vanilla pound cake drizzled in vanilla icing is already in stores and will be $6.44 and the caramel cake will be released in Walmart stores on January 18th for $13.94.

As women, we tend to take on so much in our lives. With it being a new year, it’s an also great time to get a new look! So, why not achieve a new look with a new hairstyle. Formerly Penelope is a hair company that sells some of the best Brazilian hair. I actually had the opportunity to wear the hair and interview the creator/CEO Brittani Logan about her motivation for starting Formerly Penelope.
I have 22 in of the “Penelope’s Silk Dream” and it exactly what the name says. It’s soft, silky and manageable and it looks just like my real hair! I love it and can’t wait to flaunt it and see how long it will last. In the meantime, check out my interview with the entrepreneur/grad student below.
What was your motivation behind starting Formerly Penelope?
I graduated from Tennessee State in 2014 and had a hard time finding quality hair that wasn’t expensive. In school, I became a brand ambassador for another company and ordered hair for others. However, there weren’t many available lines that had something I wanted and I wanted to develop something I wanted.
How did you come up with the name Formerly Penelope?
My alter ego was Penelope in college, but when I went into workforce, I grew out it.
What makes your brand different from other countless hair companies on the market?
Being from Detroit, we see a lot of them (hair companies), but our quality and customer service is better. I felt like that was missing. Our group of women will consult and work hand in hand with you. If you have questions about the hair, they will even set up a time and call you.
What types of hair do you have?
Right now we only have Brazilian hair that comes directly from a wholesaler. In the next few months we will be introducing Malaysian and South Eastern Asian hair, which is a finer texture.
Tips for taking care of hair.
Wash it! The hair goes through a lot before it gets to you like going through customs, so many people’s hands have touched it and can give you a different feel than with it being fresh. I prefer washing it with Shea Moisture, but just make sure to treat your hair extensions like you would your own hair.
How do you balance everything?
I’ve always had ten different things going on at the same time. I also write everything down in my planner.

It’s no secret that first impressions are everything, but what many fail to realize is that the first impression is often never created at the first introduction, but rather at first flirt!
Flirting initiates and confirms interest, ignites the spark to converse and is a sustainer of dialogue. The right flirting technique will not only attract the person you desire, but it will make you irresistible!
Here are 6 ways to stand out and command the attention of the one you want:
We’ve all had that paralyzing moment when we see someone we’re attracted to, but go back in forth in our mind about approaching them because we fear the thought of rejection.
Flirting is all about taking risks! The possibility of love arises from the courage to take a chance! So, instead of questioning whether or not to say hello, take a breath, and be playful…be casual, and introduce yourself! Your opportunity for success has already increased!
Smiling draws people in and increases your approachability. It’s a necessary component of flirting that reduces the situational anxiety, increases your confidence and results in a reciprocal reaction from the other party!
Pair a smile that’s natural and genuine with good eye contact. Glance directly into their eyes for two to four seconds, smile and then look away. Do this several times to confirm your interest; it’ll definitely grab their attention.
Appropriate physical touch is always a great way to engage flirtatiously with someone of interest. Ladies, if he says something funny, lean in, laugh and gently rub your fingers against the back of his hand. Fellas, when approaching her, it’s ok to softly shake her hand with your right and cup the back of her hand with your left. Doing this makes both parties feel good! But before you touch, make sure that there are clear signs of permission such as the person of interest moving closer in proximity to you.
One of the best ways to get someone to notice you and spark a conversation is by having a unique prop or conversation piece! If you want to stand out from the crowd and put little effort in being an approachable magnet, always have something to drive someone’s interest. Now, this may mean borrowing your friend’s dog for your daily walk in the park or picking up a trendy book to read during your commute home.
Once you establish a shared interest with another person they’ll want to get to know you more to see what else you have in common. Know that your prop doesn’t always have to be something physical. Flirting is an art and the first step to you making a lasting impression!
Be confident in your approach, have fun and set a relaxed tone for genuine exchange. Remember flirt impressions trump first impressions, so make it count!
