Rikki Clark McCoy is a therapist and founder of Flourishing Minds. She began her journey into the mental health profession by working with the Suicide Prevention Program for the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities in 2010. Rikki has worked in various clinical settings, including providing 24/7 crisis line support and intervention services for mental health and substance abuse needs in the state of Georgia, private inpatient psychiatric treatment facilities, state inpatient psychiatric treatment facilities, and public schools in the metro Atlanta area.

It’s Women’s History Month. Name 2 women who inspire you and why.

Rikki: Two women who inspire me are Michelle Obama and Beyonce. Michelle is fearless. Her intellect, her passion, her drive, and her motivation to make a difference in our country is amazing to witness. Beyonce inspires me because she works so hard to pour into her passion. It’s her life, and she is amazing at what she does.

Do you believe in work- life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?

Rikki: Yes, I do, and I educate anyone who I work with on the importance of creating a work life balance. Educating clients on ways to create boundaries around their time, I am also reminded to make time for myself on my busy schedule.  My clients like to say I practice what I preach.  I have a therapist that I talk to weekly, I do yoga daily, meditate, listen to affirming music, utilize aromatherapy, go the sauna weekly, and I get massages on a regular basis.  I also listen to my body and rest when I need to. I practice mindful eating, I hydrate, and I also take any medications or supplements to enhance my wellness.

Why is the conversation about mental health so important?

Rikk: The conversation about mental health is so important because it’s just getting started. There is so much more to learn and explore when it comes to mental health, trauma, and breaking the silence in our communities.  Creating community is so important because it shows people that they are not alone.  A lot of healing can take place and wellness rituals can be created to help us as people take better care of ourselves.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

Rikki: Over the next 6 months I will be working with 1:1 client providing therapy and wellness coaching services.  I am also hosting 2 wellness retreats this summer.  I plan to continue working on stillness and being intentional with how and who I spend my time with.
