There is that saying, “The more you know, the more you grow!”
Well, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sheen Magazine cares, so we will make sure you are aware of any information that can assist you or a love one. We met up with a staff member from Becky’s Place in Lexington Medical Center Hospital to tell us about this Boutique.
Latoya, you are an employee with Becky’s Place. Tell us about this Boutique and how it was started?
Becky’s place has been open for over 20 years and was named for Becky Johnson. Becky was a hospital volunteer, Lexington Medical Center Foundation board member, active churchwoman, devoted wife and mother, who passed away many years ago after a battle with cancer. Becky’ Place is dedicated to her memory in the hopes of encouraging and enhancing the quality of life for all who visit here.
Becky’s Place offers breast prostheses, bras, wigs, scarfs, hats, and turbans to the public. It is a resource for women recovering from breast cancer, as well as a resource to anyone going through chemotherapy, suffering from alopecia, or in need of a head covering and or a wig.
We fit women who have had a mastectomy or lumpectomy with breast prostheses and mastectomy bras. Breast prostheses are very necessary to restore balance and symmetry, and they also give these women the confidence to look and feel as good as they did before surgery. These items are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurances with a prescription from their doctor.
Becky’s Place also offers bra fittings for anyone in need, especially for women who are full busted and have a hard time finding a good fitting bra.
We provide pre-tied turbans and scarfs that are pretied as well as hats with a brim protecting from sun and hats for winter. Some ladies may not feel comfortable wearing a wig, so these items give them some other options.
All wig consultations and breast prosthesis and bra fittings are done by appointment only so we spend time with each person to ensure that each client will be getting the products that are best for her. These appointments are personal and intimate, and are conducted by expert, caring mastectomy and wig fitting specialists. Each of our fitters are certified by the American Board of Certification for Prosthetics and Orthotics, and our facility is nationally accredited with them as well. Our mastectomy and wig fitters have a collective experience of nearly 60 years.
Becky’s Place also has access to funds provided by generous donations to the Lexington Medical Center Foundation. These funds can provide a wig or a breast prosthesis and bras at no cost to a cancer survivor who is underinsured or might not be able to afford the costs of the necessary items they need. We are so very grateful for those who donate to these funds so our clients may receive these products.
How are patients able to find out about Becky’s Place?
Most of our clients have been referred to us by their surgeon, oncologist, or other physicians. We have several incredible nurse navigators at Lexington Medical Center who also tell these patients about Becky’s Place and the services we provide. Many women just hear about us through word of mouth. Our goal and passion is to make each client have a positive, uplifting experience here at Becky’s Place.
We all live by Galatians 5:13, “Serve one another in love,” and we truly love to serve women so that they can feel whole again.
