The THREADED by PLC x Foot Locker LEED initiative—Leading Education & Economic Development—is a partnership between Pensole Lewis College (PLC), the only design-focused HBCU, and Foot Locker, a leading retailer in footwear and apparel. This initiative is dedicated to supporting designers of color and independent entrepreneurs and will expand to 10 cities starting January 13 to February 14, 2025, with 14 exclusive spots available for those looking to grow their brands.
More than just an educational program, THREADED by PLC x Foot Locker LEED serves as a catalyst for economic development in the communities it supports. By focusing on designers of color and independent entrepreneurs, the initiative aims to stimulate local economies and create new opportunities for growth.
This five-week accelerator program is open to aspiring entrepreneurs in the apparel and accessories sector based in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, the DMV area, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Philadelphia. Dr. D’Wayne Edwards—design industry veteran and PLC’s founder and president—will lead the virtual-masterclass, along with guest lectures from other industry leaders, and Foot Locker representatives.
“Our mission is to build a network for entrepreneurs, making business and design education more accessible in communities that drive the industry,” said Edwards. “THREADED unites independent creatives passionate about sharing their unique stories with the world.”
As the fashion industry evolves, the need for innovative voices is paramount. This program addresses that need by offering resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities. According to Tai Neal, Vice President of Strategy for LEED at Foot Locker Inc., “By partnering with Pensole Lewis College, we’re empowering the next generation of innovators and fostering creativity within the communities we serve.”
The initiative’s focus on 10 cities underscores its commitment to revitalizing urban areas that have historically been underrepresented in the fashion landscape. By nurturing local talent, THREADED enhances the creative ecosystem and contributes to job creation and economic vitality.
Participants will gain insights into business strategies that can elevate their brands, thereby increasing brand equity and market potential. The opportunity for products to be sold online at FootLocker.com further enhances the economic impact, providing participants with immediate access to a broader customer base.
This program aims to identify, develop, and support the next generation of apparel brands, connecting independent creatives with the tools and networks needed to scale their brands across retailers nationwide.
In essence, THREADED by PLC x Foot Locker LEED serves as a model for how educational initiatives can drive economic growth. By supporting independent entrepreneurs, the program fosters a vibrant community of creatives who contribute to the economy and enrich their local cultures. This initiative reflects Foot Locker Inc.’s commitment to invest in, amplify, and empower the Black community that has played a pivotal role in shaping sneaker culture.
