Sheen Magazine had the pleasure to speak with Summer Dennis. Summer has been bubbling in the music industry like champagne on brunch Sunday for sometime with her own organic sound and she wants to put everyone on notice that she is here to stay, influence & be one of the best in the game.
How did you get into R&B?
I’ve been singing at church since I could talk. After that, I was in honors chorus and my mother put me in piano lessons. I remember hearing Lauryn Hill’s voice and thinking I wanted to be just like her. When I got to college I couldn’t major in music since I was a gymnast, so I started writing and recording my own music.
Who are or were your biggest influences that inspired you?
Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Natalie Cole, Earth Wind and Fire, Missy Elliot, Beyoncé
What would your dream collaboration be and why?
Missy Elliot would be amazing to work with because she is one of the best producers, writers, rappers, and singers out there. I know it would be a hit!
How have you handled fame from the beginning until now?
Being a gymnast since I was 7 years old and having to flip on a 4-inch wide balance beam in front of a crowd really makes anything else a breeze. When people hear my performance and they enjoy themselves, there’s no better feeling on earth. The love I feel from the audience on stage is what keeps me going, I’m just excited that people enjoy my vocals.
How does your fashion sense correlate with your music?
I love to express myself creatively in every way, and I have always been excited to have the best outfit in the room, respectfully of course. Every time i do a visual or a show, I try to tell a story with my outer appearance using color, movement, texture, and shapes.
What do you think your most favorite song that you’ve recorded?
My favorite record thus far is “You and Me” a song we recorded during the pandemic. People love that song and I’m always surprised because it was such a sad time when I wrote such a fun song.
What inspired your single “Dancing Alone”
I wanted to write a party song that was kinda neutral. My favorite line says “we can escape, leave what we know, learn what it means to just go with the flow. if there comes a day you wanna go, I will be fine with just dancing alone.” It’s not a love song, it’s not a breakup song, it’s just a fun song. And I just want to tell stories about women that don’t always center on romance and family. There’s more to us than just that.
What is the future for Summer Dennis?
I hope to be a touring artist for the rest of my life. World tours, Vegas residency, and then of course the fashion line, hair product line, and maybe a chain of resorts.
