As expected, this was a star-studded event. Niecey Nash and wife Jessica Betts were there as well as Wesley Snipes, Tracee Ellis Ross, Laverne Cox, Daniel Kaluuya, Venus and Serena Williams, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyler Perry, and many more!
One huge win that night was won by Afro-Latina, Ariana DeBose. She won Best Supporting Actress in the incredible movie, West Side Story. She made history by being the first openly queer woman of color to win the award. Her speech was triumphant and dedicated to her community by stating, “There is a place for us”. What made this moment so special for West Side Story was, Rita Moreno won in 1962 for the same role in the original film version.
CODA won Best Picture along with the cast taking home the most Oscars! King Richard was a movie that was brought to our screens to show not only the journey and making of Venus and Serena but the hard-working man behind the talent. Will Smith was nominated for Best Actor alongside Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Javier Bardem.
His acceptance speech brought his son to tears as he informed us what Denzel Washington told him backstage after an unforeseen incident with Chris Rock happened live. “At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.” The Ali actor was in tears himself and not due to the winning of the award, but of the struggles, he has endured this past year. Keeping his head high and remaining calm hasn’t always been easy for him, however, he shared what he was feeling which is what the audience appreciated.
