Japanese singer Sena Kana stopped by SHEEN Magazine to discuss communication barriers, connecting with producers, new projects, and more!

Tell us about your new single, Show Me.
The meaning of Show Me focuses on a difficult situation where you can’t see the future and how you can continue to expose yourself and actively try to communicate your feelings to others. By doing this, the light will surely shine through.
Vulnerability is not easy, as you may get hurt. However, suppose you have the courage to overcome your fears and go beyond communication barriers. In that case, even if your feelings are not conveyed to the other person or are misinterpreted, your efforts to give them will not be in vain and will lead to a better situation. Therefore, I sang this song, hoping to encourage my listeners.

The way I try to communicate my feelings is through singing. I feel like I have grown a lot through this process, and whenever I feel down, I sing, and it lifts me up! I want the people around me, and especially my listeners, to feel the same way. I hope people can understand the message I put into my song, and I hope that people can relate to it in their own way, through their personal experiences. I make music to make the world a brighter and more peaceful place, and I hope people who listen to my song are inspired to do the same.

What was it like working with Poo Bear and Ty Dolla $ign for this project?
Poo Bears’ production process is so impressive! He is incredible to work with and taught me so much. He is such a natural collaborator in his ability to bring people in and make them feel comfortable. Also, we bonded through our dreams to use our music as tools to create a better world.

We were searching for elements to take the track to the next level during the songwriting process, and we decided we should find someone to do a feature. When we began to tap into our broader network of friends and collaborators, Ty was one of the first people we reached out to. He sent back a demo of his incredible verse in record time, and we immediately knew that it was perfect for the song. This experience was a great representation of the message of the song. Despite Ty and my different backgrounds, native languages, and genres, we could communicate with each other, which Show Me is about!

Can you tell us about your favorite song from your EP, Show Me?

It’s hard to pick a specific song because each one means so much in a different way. Each piece represents something I was going through and says something I feel deeply. However, I think Show Me is probably my favorite. It took an unfortunately long time release due to the impact of COVID, and I have the strongest feelings about it. We made a fantastic music video for the song also, and I firmly believe my message was visually portrayed in it and hope that the light will reach as many people as possible. In today’s world, it is more important than ever to communicate with each other, and I felt this again when I visited the U.S. for the first time in what felt like forever!

Another song that I have been connected to lately is Undisputed. Undisputed is about being in a dark place and seeking the light of the “warrior.” The warrior can be within you or something you find in another person. I have some big plans for Undisputed, so please stay tuned!

What are you working on now, and what can we expect to see from you in the future?

I have a lot of exciting new ideas and projects and have some big plans for the not-so-distant future! Unfortunately, I can’t say too much right now, but please be on the lookout for big things!
