It is our distinct pleasure to introduce our readers to Nino Reyes. With her extensive experience at iconic institutions like Lincoln Center and Disney, Nino has mastered the art of storytelling in the digital age. For her, the most powerful tool in influencing public perception is not just technology itself but the narratives that are woven through it. In this interview, Nino shares her insights on the impact of digital media, the importance of diversity in content, and how she continues to innovate while respecting the legacies of the brands she represents.

As someone who’s excelled in journalism and digital marketing, what do you believe is the most powerful tool for influencing public perception today?

Nino: The most powerful tool for influencing public perception today is storytelling through digital media. How stories are crafted and shared across platforms can shape narratives, evoke emotions, and ultimately influence how people perceive issues, brands, or events. Digital media allows for immediate engagement, enabling creators to connect with audiences in real time and tailor messages that resonate deeply with them. I believe this is why so many brands are throwing so many dollars behind digital marketing and digital media. These brands understand how influential they are, in every aspect. Whether you’re aiming for more clients/consumers or whether it’s to sway an opinion or perspective, it is the greatest tool being used today. I believe digital media is taking away from conventional media — we are no longer going to the news, radio, or television to source our information. Today, we lean towards our devices (phones, tablets, computers) for absolutely everything. I believe this is the evolution of technology and its impact on our daily lives and behaviors.

Working at renowned institutions like Lincoln Center and Disney, how do you navigate the balance between preserving legacy and driving innovation?

Nino: Preserving legacy while driving innovation is about respecting the core values and history that make these institutions iconic, while also embracing new ideas and technologies that push boundaries — which I feel like this is where I excel and where I’m an expert. I am completely a disruptor and I’m definitely heavily involved in the evolution of technology and digital media, which allows me to understand trends and how to incorporate them into institutions like Lincoln Center and Disney. At both Lincoln Center and Disney, I focus on understanding the rich heritage of these brands and then finding creative ways to introduce fresh perspectives that resonate with modern audiences. It’s about blending tradition with innovation to keep the brand relevant and engaging.

How do you ensure that your work at major institutions like Disney continues to reflect the changing dynamics and diversities of the audiences they serve?

Nino: Ensuring that our work reflects the diverse dynamics of our audiences involves actively listening to and understanding different communities. This means engaging with a wide range of voices, particularly those that have been underrepresented in the past, and incorporating their perspectives into our content and strategies. Identifying as a Black and Latina woman allows me to use my cultural experience to enhance diversity within our teams and organization — and within the branding of the company. We need more of us in these rooms in order to see more representation, and this is where it all starts. Our voices need to be heard in these board rooms and in these corporate meetings because that’s where major decisions are being made, which is what truly impacts our culture and the things that our community sees.

Is there a particular project or campaign that you feel encapsulates your vision for what media can achieve, and what did it take to bring that vision to life?

Nino: One project that encapsulates my vision for media is my work on diversity initiatives at Lincoln Center. This involved creating campaigns that highlighted the stories and talents of underrepresented artists, bringing their voices to the forefront. It required extensive collaboration, a deep understanding of the community, and a commitment to authenticity. The result was a series of events and digital content that not only celebrated diversity but also engaged audiences in meaningful conversations about culture and representation. Also, I work on the majority of the Spanish translations of all the marketing and branding materials at Lincoln Center, so seeing that my pieces of work are reaching the Latino community, shows me how influential I can be — and how influential my vision is.

What does the fall season have in store for you?

Nino: This fall season I am focused heavily on launching my show Keeping It Trill. You can find my podcast on Instagram and TikTok at @KeepingItTrillPod. My show focuses on highlighting artists, entrepreneurs, and trailblazers from all walks of life. It is focused on their careers, their journey, their trials and tribulations and so much more. We will be launching our first episode in October so I’m looking forward for everyone to experience this journey with me. I will also be focusing more on my journalism career by writing more about major talent and artists.

What role do you believe digital media plays in shaping cultural narratives, and how do you ensure that underrepresented voices are included in these conversations?

Nino: Digital media plays a crucial role in shaping cultural narratives because it allows for a broad and immediate dissemination of stories. To ensure underrepresented voices are included, I prioritize content that reflects diverse perspectives and actively seek out collaborations with creators from various backgrounds. This approach helps to create a more inclusive media landscape where different stories and experiences can be shared and celebrated.

What would you like our viewers to gain from this interview?

Nino: I hope viewers gain an understanding of the importance of authenticity and diversity in media. I want them to see that while legacy and tradition are important, innovation and inclusivity are what will drive us forward. It’s essential to keep pushing the envelope, listening to new voices, and finding ways to connect with audiences in meaningful ways. Also, to ensure that we are SHOWING UP! It is important that we go for these major and high-level roles. We have the ability to lead and our voices are POWERFUL. It’s time that we show up at the forefront and that we recognize the VALUE that we carry.
