It’s Sunday and it’s Mother’s Day, so what better way to spend it then at a Keyshia Cole concert? Taking over The Novo in Los Angeles for a special evening of R&B, hip-hop, and soul, the Oakland, California native blessed concertgoers with her beauty, talents, and undeniable voice. The show was titled “A Mother’s Day Special” featuring Keyshia Cole, alongside openers Goapele, Jon B, and Luck.

Gracing the stage with a fashionable coat and a sleek black corset underneath, the Bay Area immediately put on a show, starting things off with “Enough of No Love” featuring the one and only Lil Wayne. “I Changed My Mind” was next, and you were suddenly reminded that Keyshia boasts a long catalog of hits that will have you singing the lyrics verbatim.

Diddy’s “Last Night,” “Let It Go” featuring Missy Elliott & Lil Kim, “Trust” featuring Monica, and “Love” were highlights, but let’s not forget her beautiful Tupac story. She begins:

“The night Tupac got shot, he told me some really special things that helped me cope along the way in this nasty business, you know what I mean? That has no loved ones in this motherfucker. Well, I disobeyed. I still didn’t listen… but anyway. [laughs] He told me the night that he got shot to keep my head up, to make sure that I stay in my books, that I read. Nobody can take that knowledge from me.”

She then reminds us this is just a story. She continues, “He told me that ‘you’re beautiful, but that’s another reason why they’re going to hurt you. So you gotta protect yourself, you gotta protect your heart.’ And I didn’t really listen to that but nonetheless, that’s my story.”

Next, she brought out the Outlawz to perform “Baby Don’t Cry,” as artwork of Tupac and his mother was brought to the stage. Additionally, she paid tribute to her late mother who recently passed, Frankie, in which she referred to her as Frank Da Bank.

Keyshia’s son Tobas was sighted in the corner of the stage, cheering his mother on in the spirit of Mother’s Day. Go Keyshia!
