Oakland-based artist and philanthropist Kev Choice releases his new single and video, “Prove,” featuring 17-year-old saxophone sensation Ayo Brame, available now via Mind Music Entertainment. Download / Stream here.

“Prove” is a powerful testament to Kev Choice’s multifaceted evolution, a fusion of live instrumentation and hip-hop roots that defines his current sound. The track is not just a personal narrative, but a universal anthem, illustrating Choice’s accomplishments and the hurdles we all face and strive to overcome. 

“I feel like this is a powerful song reflective of my musical journey,” Choice explains. 

He emphasizes the importance of sharing his story as a testament to how far he’s come while also acknowledging the path ahead. The collaboration with saxophone prodigy Ayo Brame adds a fresh, dynamic layer to the track, highlighting the synergy between established artistry and emerging talent. 

Accompanying the single is a visually compelling music video directed by Tony Vic. The concept of the video features Kev Choice in a spiritual setting, engaged in a reflective dialogue with God about his career and life path. It also includes clips from various performances throughout his career, offering a unique perspective on his journey. Filmed in his Oakland church, the video combines simplicity in its production with innovative post-production effects, creating a fresh experience distinct from his previous projects.

ABOUT KEV CHOICE

Kev Choice is a pianist, M.C., producer, composer, educator, bandleader, and community advocate, hailing from Oakland, CA. He started playing piano and rapping at age 11 at Oakland’s Westlake Junior High and graduated high school from Oakland’s Skyline High School. He went on to study music and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and a master’s degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, both in Piano Performance. His music is a blend of styles he has been influenced by and studied from Hip-Hop, Jazz, Classical, Neo-Soul, R&B, and more.

Kev has worked and toured the world with artists such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, Michael Franti, Goapele, Too Short, Ledisi, Martin Luther McCoy, The Coup, Zion I, DJ Quik, Dwele, and more. In 2010, he began to focus on his own music and band, Kev Choice Ensemble, He has produced 5 solo albums, including Social Distancing (2020). He has also independently released Oakland Riviera (2014), Love and Revolution (2015), 88 Steps to Eternity (2016), Social Distancing (2020), and collaboration projects with producer DJ Fresh, The Lush and Luxurious Vibes (2020), SEEDS 22: Truths & Roses (2021) with DJ Basta, and Tatu: The Trio Sessions (2021). He was commissioned to compose a work for the Oakland Symphony, Soul Restoration Suite in 2018 and In 2020 wrote a piece for San Francisco Symphony entitled “Movements“. Most recently, he released a new EP, “All My Love” (2024).

He currently serves on and is vice-chair of the City of Oakland’s Cultural Affairs Commission. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Oakland Symphony and is President of the SF Chapter advisory board of the Recording Academy. He is currently a Project Coordinator with Elevate Oakland, a music education non-profit serving Oakland Public Schools and in fall 2024, will begin teaching as a professor in the music department at San Francisco State University.
