Award-winning playwright and producer Je’Caryous Johnson is back, redefining the stage play experience with his latest original production, Games Women Play.  Directed by the legendary Carl Payne—who has directed in the past, but this marks his highly anticipated theatrical directorial debut with Je’Caryous—this electrifying play promises a thrilling, laughter-packed experience that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

This electrifying 12-city tour includes stops in major cities such as Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Atlanta, bringing together a star-studded cast including Carl Payne (known for Martin and House of Payne), Jill Marie Jones (Girlfriends), Flex Alexander (One on One), Demetria McKinney (House of Payne), Chico Bean (Wild ‘N Out), Claudia Jordan (Fox Soul Host,The Real Housewives of Atlanta), and Brian J. White (Stomp the Yard).

I had the opportunity to sit down for an exclusive interview with director and cast member Carl Payne, Claudia Jordan, and Chico Bean, and let me tell you—it was an interview packed with laughter, candid moments, and some unexpected banter from comedian Chico Bean that almost threw a monkey wrench into the questions! But I quickly boomeranged the conversation right back on track, creating a comical moment that captured the essence of the fun dynamic between the cast members.

Behind the Scenes: The Cast’s Insight

Claudia Jordan, who plays a sexy, messy talk show host in Games Women Play, opened up about how social media often creates a false narrative of her character. She shared, “People perceive me based on what they see on social media, but I save my energy for those who truly invest the time to get to know me. It’s important for people to understand my core values, my ambitions, and how I handle my boss moves.”  Claudia stated that she loves working with this cast! She said, “We actually like each other… and look forward to reconnecting when we separate,  it’s like a family reunion!

Chico Bean, who is making his theatrical stage debut in Games Women Play, beamed with excitement about portraying a younger brother. “In real life, I’ve always been the older brother, so this role is a refreshing change for me,” Chico said. “Now, I can proudly say that I started my acting career in theatre. There’s been so much buzz around theatre lately, especially from actors that I admire! “I’m excited that I can finally be a part of that conversation.”

Carl Payne, a veteran in the acting world, reflected on his early days in theatre and how it played a pivotal role in shaping his career. “I got bit by the acting bug early when I grew up in New York,” Carl shared. “Theater was my first love. Like Denzel says, I’m a theater actor that just happens to do television and film.” Well-versed in theatre, Carl honed his craft before landing the iconic role of Cole Payne on Martin. While directing Games Women Play is not his directorial debut, Carl emphasized, “This is the first time I’ve directed for Je’Caryous Johnson, and the experience has been incredible.”  Carl plays Caleb, a successful businessman that tries to manage his money, manhood, and his future marriage.

Opening Night: A Night to Remember

As a Sheen Magazine correspondent, I had the chance to attend the opening night of Games Women Play, and let me just say—it did not disappoint. The energy in the theatre was electric, and the audience was fully engaged. Familiar faces in the crowd included musical powerhouse Shanice Wilson (who also happens to be Flex Alexander’s wife) and multi-talented actor and singer Tisha Campbell, Carl Payne’s former Martin co-star. The crowd laughed, cried, and engaged in vibrant talk backs to the cast in true urban fashion!

The play itself offers a rollercoaster of emotions, blending drama, humor, and powerful moments that resonate with all audiences. It’s a production that anyone can enjoy, regardless of race or gender, though I would recommend it for audiences aged 18 and up. Whether you’re into intense drama or just in need of a good laugh, Games Women Play has something for everyone.
