You wear many hats. Artist, Producer, and Songwriter. Which one do you feel is most important, and why?
JAMES: They all are important in different ways. When making a masterpiece you need every element to make it come to life. Without lyrics, and a vision there is no song, without music there is no song, without talent there is no song.
When you think about your sound, your artistry, what would you classify your genre as?
JAMES: Most would classify it as R&B/Soul, but I am more of a worldy artist meaning that I can do multiple styles or genres which gives me room to create how I would want. To classify that would maybe fall under Urban Pop if I had to label it.
You’ve had your music in movies as well as participated in scoring yourself. What was that process like for you?
JAMES: Scoring is a very specific, and unique skill when it comes to film because you’re crafting music catering to emotions, movement, feeling, and styles of each scene in a film. It can be challenging, but much rewarding in the end when hearing, and watching it come to life. The sync aspect of having your own music in a film is also amazing. It reassures you that you’re doing something right.
Do you typically have a writing process when you’re sitting down to start your new projects?
JAMES: I don’t really have a specific process, but once I have an idea I most times start with melodies to start the flow, and craft the production around it. After that i begin writing the lyrics towards it. It’s all about feeling.
When you think of some of your musical inspirations, what were things that made them standout?
JAMES: That’s a long list, but off the top: Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Nile Rodgers, A Tribe Called Quest, Whodini, Kanye West, and many others. They all have similar things in common which are they did not sound the same. They’ve all brought signature, and groundbreaking art to the industry. Also being a true musician at a very young age I’ve always admired the technology side of music as it progressed throughout the years. From analog to digital, hardware, software, etc. It all inspires me to stay creative.
Tell our readers about your new project, and what they can expect?
JAMES: I’ve recently released my single “Your Heart” which references the temptations of Hollywood. This is the 1st single off of my upcoming EP “Cups Of Koffee” which will be releasing in September of this year. The project is very musical, and eclectic so it has something for all music tastes.
At this point who would you say are some of your dream collaborations?
JAMES: There are so many people that I admire musically, but I don’t really have dream collaborations. I connect with those who understand the essence of musicianship, and making something great.
You’ve been dropping new music and making sure to stay relevant. What are your promotional plans for your new music? What’s next for James Worthy?
JAMES: Yes I have recently released my latest single “Your Heart” which is available on all platforms through my label imprint Humble Sound Records. We plan to release my next EP on September 13th on the label. Stay tuned for that!
We love when new artist come with the old school. James Worthy’s sound is truly timeless and his collaborations simply add to his traditional r and b sound. This modest producer is still capturing the hearts and ears of music lovers worldwide. We can’t wait to hear his next chart topping sound.
