If you find yourself struggling to settle on a health and fitness regime that blends with your crazy lifestyle, you’re not alone. Health expert and BODi Super Trainer Autumn Calabrese is here to simplify this process.
“I’ve led a crazy life and it’s still crazy—probably a lot like yours,” says Autumn Calabrese, BODi Super Trainer and author of Lose Weight Like Crazy Even If You Have a Crazy Life!: Life Lessons and a Breakthrough 30-Day Nutrition and Fitness Solution! With endless information continuously being pushed through the pipeline of social media, from praising fad diets to achieving a “desirable physique”, to promoting diet culture, it can feel hopeless. But finding the needle in the haystack is not as difficult as it’s made out to be—according to Calabrese, it’s quite simple.
“That’s a mindset that so many people have: ‘I have to diet.’ And when you look at it like diet and not lifestyle, then it feels restrictive, and it feels like you can’t go out and have fun,” she explains. Despite being a renowned fitness coach, not even Calabrese diets. “I have a lifestyle of healthy eating, but I can go anywhere my friends go and have a meal that is delicious and enjoyable and not feel like I’m missing out ever.”
Rather than prescribing one rigid way of leading a healthy lifestyle, Calabrese encourages maintaining a balance and being ok with grabbing a drink with friends or having dessert on a Saturday night. “I won’t deprive myself of it. It’s just not something I choose to have every day, because that’s not my lifestyle,” she says. “It’s a mindset of ‘let me eat more of this and a little less of that,’ instead of completely removing certain food groups.”
“One of the biggest studies that’s ever been done found that the biggest determining factor of gut health is the variety of plants you eat in a week. If you’re getting in 30 different plants throughout the week, you’re in a good place for feeding your gut microbiome,” Calabrese discusses. As they say, your gut is your second brain, and when your microbiota is out of balance, it can throw everything else off-kilter, all due to what you’re eating.
Recognizing that “we are what we eat,” makes it a bit easier to understand just how harmful highly processed foods are to the body. Next time you go to the grocery store, pick at least three different fruits and three different vegetables. Once you have your building blocks so to speak, you can try different recipes, combine flavors, and find what makes your taste buds and gut happy. “It can be that simple,” Calabrese says.
Sounds manageable, right? What about a best fitness plan, one that doesn’t take up hours of your day or week?
“It’s really easy to look at somebody like me where I’m at right now and assume that I don’t understand, but you have to remember, I wasn’t always here,” shares Calabrese. For most of her life, she lived paycheck to paycheck, not knowing how the next bill was going to get paid, working 14-hour days as a trainer while raising her then three-year-old as a single mom. Yet, Calabrese still managed to find 2 hours in her day for training and meal prepping.
Today, she is the creator of the breakthrough hit workout, 21 Day Fix®, one of BODi’s top-selling programs, the Ultimate Portion Fix Nutrition program, 4 Weeks for Every Body, The 4 Week Gut Protocol, and a best-selling author.
“Where there’s a will, there is a way to do it, because you can’t do it on somebody else’s time,” she emphasizes. “And again, it all goes back to mindset. If you say there’s no time, then you’re not going to find the time and you’re not going to make the time. But if you say ‘It’s important to me,’ you start to look at your 24 hours. We all get the same 24 hours, and there are many people with very busy schedules who manage to make it work.”
Calabrese, who has remained steadfast to her belief in helping people since day one, is here to tell you it is possible—once you choose to make the mental switch, you’ll see just how easy it can be. With the right mindset, there’s nothing you can’t achieve.
“Sky’s the limit. It’s hard to say exactly where I’m going next, but it’s just going to be to help more people.”
