As you know, I am always talking about how important it is to move your body and it is important to do so, but it is also just as important to rest your body. I’m not just talking about rest days from working out but getting enough sleep at night is essential to your health. Getting sleep sounds like an easy thing to do but for me that is tough and maybe you too. I generally get 4 to 5 hours a night, I know, I know, that’s not a lot of rest for many but for me typically 4 hours were good for me. However, the older I get and now being in Menopause, that 4 hours is getting less and less so I am now forced to act and make sleep a priority. I am going to share with you a few tips I’m working on so that we all can get more ZZZ’s in our life.
- Have a routine. For us mothers we would make our kids brush their teeth, take their bath, crawl into bed for a bedtime story by a certain time. Why not do that for ourselves? Let’s select a realistic time that we can go to bed each night and start doing a nightly routine. Take a long hot bath, read, meditate, or do yoga; whatever you heart desires.
- Put your phone away. I remember when my kids were younger, I would make them charge their phones downstairs, far away from their bedrooms. Now a days, we use our phone as an alarm to wake us up in the mornings. I get it, you can go old school and have an old fashion alarm, they do still sell them. But if you don’t want to do that you can put your phone on Do Not Disturb and it will block all alerts and calls till your set time to wake. Don’t worry if it’s an emergency from someone that is saved in your favorites their call will still come through.
- Soothing noise: If you are anything like me, I need to have some sort of noise to go to sleep and I’m not talking about my husband’s snoring. There are many apps that you can download (since we will have our phone near, might as well use it to help us sleep) that can help with sounds to lure you to sleep. You can also use an oil diffuser, there are many great essential oil blends that you can use to soothe you to sleep as well.
Look, we know that getting less than 6 hours of sleep in not enough sleep for your body to recharge. Sleeping at least 6-7 hours a night helps to reduce stress, allows our bodies to repair itself, helps with our memory and just make us feel like we can tackle the day. So who is with me? Let’s get more ZZZ’s in!
