If Curly Girl Collective isn’t familiar to you, it hosts one of the largest and most popular, yearly natural hair events in the U.S.—CURLFEST. This year due to the pandemic, an outdoor festival of that size (and fabulousness!) was not possible. But that didn’t stop Curly Girl Collective from pivoting and hosting an amazing virtual experience this past weekend–CURLFEST Beauty Summit. The day-long virtual event, hosted by America’s Next Top Model contestant, Bre Scullark, was filled with celebrity appearances, musical guests, natural hair talks and demos.
Curly Girl Collective Founders started off the beauty summit chatting with activist Michaela Angela Davis. The day continued with a conversation on the groundbreaking CROWN Act, led by Cosmopolitan Beauty Director Julee Wilson, a panel discussion on women’s hair and the male perspective that included Jidenna, Angela Yee and Rob Hill Sr. Mielle Organics founder Monique Rodriguez gave the inspirational message during her chat, encouraging viewers to trust God during this pandemic and find the blessings in hard times.
Hairstylist Angela Christine showed viewers how to achieve faux bangs and cute buns using Cantu products, while beauty bosses, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Stephens and Maya Smith talked their burgeoning natural hair brands. When it came to movement and music, CURLFEST did not disappoint—popular group, Kukuwa Fitness led an Afro-Fusion workout, self-described “TrapHouseJazz” artist, Masego performed, and the always amazing Erykah Badu closed out the virtual event.
All those who registered for the free event were given coupons to shop some of the top natural hair brands at Target, while those who opted to purchase a Beauty Summit Gift Bag were mailed a huge haul of hair and beauty items.
If this is the new way to host a beauty festival sign me up for next year! All that’s missing are the fabulous outfits!
