How has your story motivated you on days when there seems to be nothing to keep you going?
I relentlessly keep a journal for this very reason. It’s vital for me to have the receipts of how I’ve overcome struggles – this is literally the fuel in my tank on those rough days. It’s unbelievable how easy it is to forget how much we’ve accomplished – having a tangible reminder is key to keeping me motivated.
In what ways, if any, did you have to pivot to ensure your vision was well executed?
Every day is a pivot as an entrepreneur. I think the key is pinpointed well in your question – although the side streets may change, the overall destination is the same. I am an avid planner – every five years, three years, one year, quarter, month, and day, I work and rework my plan. Keeping my eyes locked and loaded on my overall vision allows me to navigate day-to-day changes well. As long as I’m headed in the right direction, I’m OK!
How do you showcase the empowerment of Women’s History Month every day?
Lately, I’ve become much more engaged with my community…here in Atlanta and with women worldwide. It’s so important that we feel seen and lift each other up. This sentiment is not just a Women’s History Month thing; it’s an everyday thing. It’s so easy to get bogged down in the mundane and overcome with the struggles of entrepreneurship and life. Being that person to remind someone else that 1) I’ve been there too and 2) I’m here for you is incredibly important. Others have shown me that same grace, so I try my best to pay it forward.
Who are some lesser-known female entrepreneurs from history that you admire and believe deserve more recognition?
Absolutely every single stay-at-home Mom! Little do they realize that they are entrepreneurs in their own right, keeping the household on track, helping the family meet their goals, making the house safe, and protecting its energy. They absolutely do not get enough credit for what they do each and every day.
Reflecting on your own experiences, what are some effective ways that male allies have supported you in your career journey?
Both of the mentors in my entrepreneurial journey have been men. Neither of them was a gatekeeper – they understood their privilege, shared the tips, and were there on Saturdays when I needed to vent or pivot.
How do you strike a balance between ambition and self-care as a woman in a demanding business environment?
My secret? Put it on your calendar. Just like my business goals, meetings, and projects, I put my devotion time, gym, yoga, and bath time on my calendar. As a matter of fact, each Sunday, when I sit down to plan, I put self-care activities on my calendar FIRST. This is my way of showing myself that I and my spirituality are most important.
