Emerging artist, Naomi Cowan has just recently dropped a brand new single! The new single titled, “Energy” is one we’re positive will be at the top of your Most Played Songs! Shortly after her release, we caught up with Cowan to discuss everything from the history of music in her family, the new single of course, and much more!
Tell us about your single, “Energy.” What inspired it?
Energy was inspired by a negative experience I had while dating someone, essentially this guy ghosted me – something that I’d never experienced before. However, the song isn’t necessarily about him – it’s about every single time we encounter experiences or environments that drain us of who we truly are. I am a huge proponent of self-empowerment & taking back your power… “Energy” is the song I listen to when I need to remind myself of who I am.
Music is in your blood. Do you believe that it was something you just knew would be the path you would take in your life?
Man, there is so much in my blood, there’s music, there’s dance, there’s the gift of speech (my grandfather was a preacher, my dad is one of Jamaica’s most decorated MCs) – so honestly, I always knew I was meant to entertain, to perform, to share, to be a person of influence however at a young age I was always open to many paths. I started modelling at a young age, I’ve been a TV host, however music is what brings me the most joy. When I’m able to have a shared experience with an audience with a band – it’s like nothing else I’ve ever done – and I hope to do that for as long as possible. At the core of my musical desires though, kt’s really to be a person of influence to young women. I have a huge passion for women taking their rightful place in society – I’ve had to fight for my voice to be heard and to be seen for more than my looks or for my role as a female. So, I always ensure that I find ways to speak into the lives of my peers or younger women through various initiatives.
How would you describe your music? Are there any artists that inspire you?
My music is a lot like me – it’s influenced by many places but undeniably me. The first time my dad heard me produce a song, he described it as Refreshing, as Sunshine & now with the new music I’ve worked on – it’s certainly unapologetic. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be part of a global movement, I always wanted to represent my island on a global scale. So maybe as you listen a bit more, you can describe my sound for yourself 😉
What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see from you in 2021?
This year, you can simply expect lots of new music. I invested a lot of my time in 2020 into being in the studio – collaborating & strategizing. Right now, our only issue is which songs to choose from! Which is a great problem to have.
The first thing you can expect is a mixtape from me presented by Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire. Followed by an EP in the Summer. In addition to that – you can expect a next level creative roll-out, that’s all I’ll say for now.
