If you’re looking for a safe, friendly, and ridiculously affordable getaway that’s NOT overrun with people smoking hookah at every turn, Antigua, Guatemala, is your spot. The city is like a real-life postcard, where cobblestone streets meet volcano views, and where you can ball out on a budget without side-eyeing your bank account.

Here’s the ultimate guide to making the most of your trip to Antigua—because trust me, you’re gonna love it.

First Stop: Guatemala City – A Strategic Snack Grab

Before even thinking about the drive to Antigua, stock up in Guatemala City. Grab your snacks, your wine (because, priorities), and anything else you might need. Antigua’s traffic is no joke, and being stuck in a car, hungry, and sober is NOT the move.

Dinner at Mr. Taco – The Right Way to Kick Off Your Trip

📍 Mr. Taco Mexican Food

After touching down, do yourself a favor and stop at Mr. Taco. Their Mexican food is fresh, flavorful, and most importantly, quick—because the last thing you want is to waste time when an adventure awaits.

Casa Catarina – Your Stylish Home in Antigua

📍 Casa Catarina

This isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a vibe. Casa Catarina is beautiful, well-located, and perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. Plus, it’s affordable without sacrificing style, which means more money for food and fun (aka, the important things).

Tourist Attractions – What’s Worth It & What’s Overrated

Hobbitenango – A Hard Pass Unless You Have Kids

Hobbitenango promises whimsical, hobbit-inspired scenery, but unless you’re traveling with little ones, this place is just meh. The aesthetic isn’t as Instagrammable as expected, and overall, it felt underwhelming.

Altamira – Where You’ll Actually Get the Perfect Shot

If you want gorgeous views, cool sculptures, and picture-perfect moments, Altamira is the spot. It’s totally worth the visit and makes up for the disappointment of Hobbitenango.

Unlimited Wine & Guatemalan Cuisine? Say Less.

La Tortilla Cooking School – The Best Activity in Antigua

This was, hands down, my favorite part of the trip.  Unlimited Wine (Yes, You Read That Right)! Learning how to cook traditional Guatemalan dishes, drinking as much wine as my heart desired, and vibing with other travelers? 10/10 recommend.

Nightlife in Antigua – Small, but Solid

Aqua Antigua – The Chill Vibes Spot

📍 Aqua Antigua

Aqua Antigua is perfect for a laid-back drink before hitting the bar scene. It’s not a wild party spot, but it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the night.

El Barrio – Where the Party’s At

El Barrio is essentially a collection of bars, which means you can hop from spot to spot without committing to just one vibe. Perfect for when you’re indecisive about where to spend the night.

Hiking a Volcano & Eating Pizza (Because Why Not?)

Pacaya Volcano – A Hike You Might Want to Cheat On

If you love the outdoors, this is a must-do. If you’re not an outside person? Skip it or take the horse up—because this hike is NOT for the weak. The best part? You get to cook pizza over volcanic heat, which is easily one of the most unique food experiences ever.

Final Dinner at Uuuh Mami – Because You Deserve It

📍 Uuuh Mami

After all the adventure, end your trip with a phenomenal dinner at Uuuh Mami. The food is delicious, creative, and well worth the visit.
