The 18th Annual All-Star Gospel Celebration (ASGC) embraced the spirit of unity and inspiration, captivating attendees at the stunning CIEL Creative Space in Berkeley, CA. Themed “A Love Letter to the Bay,” this cherished event brought together NBA stars, legends, and local heroes, showcasing the profound impact of faith and community in a night filled with uplifting performances and heartfelt recognition.

Co-hosted by former NBA player Maurice “MO” Evans and National Basketball Wives Association member Dru Evans, ASGC reaffirmed its position as the hallmark gospel event of NBA All-Star weekend. The evening was alive with electrifying performances from an array of talented artists, including comedian J-Red, Motown Gospel sensation Ariel Fitz-Patrick, GRAMMY-nominated soul singer MAJOR., saxophonist Angella Christie, hip-hop artist Miles Minnick, and Stellar Award winner Lena Byrd Miles.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2025 Slam Dunk Honors, celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions both on and off the court. The honorees shared moving testimonies that emphasized the transformative power of faith and the importance of giving back to the community.

NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton, recipient of the 2025 Slam Dunk Off-the-Court Award, reflected on his journey, stating, “I grew up in church and attend every Sunday. People think we just get here and have talent. Don’t believe that. God had a lot to do with that.” His heartfelt words resonated with the audience, highlighting the deep connection between personal faith and community service.

Legendary NBA champion Elvin Hayes, awarded the 2025 Slam Dunk Living Legend Award, spoke passionately about legacy and service. He noted, “…the most important thing this week is that we will be honoring God. He carried me through 16 years of NBA seasons,” inspiring attendees to consider their own impact on the world.

Kevon Looney, forward for the Golden State Warriors, received the 2025 Slam Dunk Game Changer Award. He expressed gratitude to the NBA Chaplains for their support during challenging times, sharing, “My mom and dad’s prayers got me here. I pray for myself and my teammates, and I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Ay’Anna Moody, Senior Director of Social Impact for the Warriors Foundation, was honored with the 2025 Slam Dunk Community Service Award, recognizing her unwavering dedication to uplifting the community. The event also honored local heroes like Pastor Mike McBride of Live Free USA and community advocate Mistah. F.A.B, who have made significant contributions to the Bay Area.

Tomeka Holyfield, the visionary behind ASGC, expressed her pride in the event’s impact, stating, “Berkeley, California, truly exceeded our hopes and dreams. Each year, the All-Star Gospel Celebration shines a light on the profound power of faith in our lives.” Her words encapsulated the essence of the night: a celebration of unity, hope, and the remarkable achievements of those committed to service.

As a prelude to the awards, a panel discussion titled “Dear Community” facilitated a dialogue on pressing community issues, showcasing the intersection of sports, culture, and activism. Pastor Mike McBride emphasized the importance of this platform, stating, “ASGC provided a way to uplift the spirit and elevate heroes whose journey inspires us to embrace hope and joy.”

With support from partners like Shoulder Up, Live Free USA, Visit Berkeley, Becker Boards, and California Black Freedom Fund the celebration not only recognized achievements but also raised funds for critical causes, including breast cancer awareness, autism research, and sickle cell disease support.

The 18th Annual All-Star Gospel Celebration was more than an event; it was a heartfelt tribute to the Bay Area, leaving attendees inspired and united in purpose. In the words of Pastor McBride, it was indeed “a Love Letter to The Bay,” marking a blessed kickoff to NBA All-Star weekend.
