Photography has the exceptional power to inspire and move us, capturing emotions and telling stories in a single frame. Ethan Champion, a well- known Atlanta based photographer, is continuing to make a name for himself through photography and helping models build their portfolios. His road to photography began in 2022, though he admits he didn’t always see himself becoming a photographer. Interestingly, in 2020, Champion worked in the film industry, constantly surrounded by other creative individuals. However, his love and passion for the camera was undeniable. Determined to learn more, he began networking, found a mentor to show him the ropes, and began working behind the scenes with other established photographers to build his skills and master his craft. By 2023, he obtained his first very owned camera, officially stepping into the world of photography.

Champion shares that his favorite part of working with models is witnessing their growth and seeing their talent evolve over time. He emphasizes the importance of models understanding their niche and target market when working with photographers. Champion admits that maintaining high energy during shoots is something that is important to him, but as somewhat an introvert, is also something he continues to work on. When he first started out, this was a major challenge trying to maintain high energy, but he always strives to create an open and inviting space for his clients. He deeply values the photographer- model relationship and is intentional about making his clients feel comfortable and empowered in front of the camera. Although he has only been doing photography for a few years, he is committed to growth and evolution. He recognizes consistency as one of the main ways he constantly grows as a photographer. He also ensures that he puts the type of work out there that what he wants to attract. When people come to his page, they will see elegant, high- fashion and clean images and that’ll shape his target audience.

Champion emphasizes a common mistake he sees among models building their portfolios is focusing too much on Instagram- style pictures and trendy poses for clout rather than taking the craft seriously. He stresses that a strong portfolio requires intentionality, not just social media appeal. Another common mistake he often sees is models inquiring about a photoshoot, but not having their digitals done, an essential requirement for anyone serious about breaking into the modeling industry. Another crucial factor, he notes, is investing in a skilled photographer. “If you’re aiming for high- end fashion work but book a cheap photographer, your images will reflect that”, he explains. “The outcome likely won’t meet the industry standard.”

Champion describes his photography style as elegant, high- fashion, editorial, and clean branding work, his personal favorites. However, he remains open and versatile to capturing whatever his clients need, from high fashion model shoots to casual birthday shoots. When working with new or inexperienced clients, Champion prioritizes guiding them through the process and helping them feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. He even brings in professional model coaches if needed to help with posing and bringing their vision to life. His creative process is highly strategic when planning a shoot. He begins with curating inspiration and a mood board on Pinterest. If he comes across an inspiring location while out, he snaps a photo to remember and reference later. If he knows a model who he believes would be a perfect fit, he reaches out to them and then assembles his team, which includes a hairstylist, makeup artist, and a creative director. He emphasizes the vital role of a creative director on set, as their presence allows the photographer to focus on capturing the perfect shot and ensuring the lighting is just right. Meanwhile, the creative director oversees the models posing and ensures the shoot is properly aligning with the mood board, creating a seamless and well- executed final product.

One of Champion’s most memorable shoots to date was his recent Black History hair photoshoot, which went viral on Instagram. The overwhelming responses, including requests for prints, served as a powerful reminder of his potential and the limitless opportunities in his career. For him, success as a photographer is not just a dream, but an achievable reality. What sets Champion apart from other photographers is his versatility and fearless creativity. He embraces new challenges, constantly pushing artistic boundaries. Passion drives his work, and once he sets his mind on something, he refuses to give up.

Looking ahead, Champion envisions himself traveling to New York more frequently. Reflecting on the most recent Fashion Week, this past February, he recalls how multiple models reached out to work while he was there. His goal is to secure a place in the city, allowing him to work there more often while keeping Atlanta as his home base. Additionally, he hopes to expand his portfolio by working with more brands and taking on more commercial projects.

For aspiring photographers and models, Champion’s advice is simple, yet powerful: “Always be yourself. You don’t have to be like anyone else.” He also stresses the importance of brand representation. “How you present yourself matters. Always leave a lasting impression, make an impact, and, most importantly, stay consistent.”

As Champion continues to carve out his path in the industry, his dedication to his craft remains unwavering. With his fearless approach to creativity, and a drive to push boundaries, he is proving that success in photography isn’t just about talent, but also vision and persistence. No matter what he’s capturing, his impact is undeniable. With his journey still unfolding, it’s clear that this is only the beginning for Ethan Champion.
