Duwayne Turner, also known as “The Headturner” is a multifaceted creative making waves in the beauty industry. True to his name, Turner’s work commands attention, turning heads with its artistry and undeniable flair. For Turner, beauty is more than skin deep; he defines it as an accessory that not only enhances our appearance but is also an extension of our innermost selves. Turner’s journey into the world of beauty began at Ohio State University, where he majored in fashion merchandising. A Columbus, Ohio native, his passion for the industry, however, took root long before college. Growing up as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, he always loved beauty and fashion and found inspiration in the confidence and style of iconic Black women from beloved 90s TV shows such as Regine Hunter from Living Single and Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel- Air.
At 31, Turner encountered one of the biggest challenges of his career, a feeling of stagnation. He realized he had outgrown his current environment and needed a change to continue evolving professionally. This realization led him to make a bold move to Atlanta. Despite not knowing anyone there, Turner embraced the transition, understanding that stepping out of his comfort zone was essential for his growth.
As a versatile artist skilled in both hair and makeup, Turner admits that makeup holds a special place in his creative process. For him, makeup is a more artistic and expressive medium. He explains “If you don’t like it, you can always wipe It right off, whereas hair requires a more extensive process to change.” Turner recognizes that some clients have very specific visions, which can also present challenges. However, he always strives to lead with integrity, balancing his creative expertise with his clients’ desires. Honesty and reassurance are keys to his approach, as he reminds clients that he knows what will enhance their natural beauty. Yet, Turner always remains humble and open- minded. He recognizes that although he brings professional expertise, he is not a woman, and ultimately, clients know their own faces better than anyone else. This humility keeps him teachable and willing to learn.
As a seasoned beauty professional in his late 30s, Turner observes that the new generation of beauty professionals operate quite differently from what he grew up with. One of his primary concerns is the noticeable lack of professionalism among some in the industry today. Creating an exceptional experience for every client who sits in his chair is a non- negotiable for Turner. He also believes that the sense of community among hairstylists has diminished. “The need to be around other stylists and learn from one another feels like a lost art”, he shares. In his view, many aspiring professionals are eager to become independent and immediately secure their own private suites, rather than first working in a salon setting. Turner feels that collaborating with others in a salon environment is essential, not only for honoring skills but also for mutual growth and support. He believes this shift in mindset has also influenced the attitudes of many clients today.
When it comes to beauty trends, Turner would love to see a resurgence of iconic 90s natural hairstyles, such as pixie cuts and bobs. He emphasizes the importance of returning to the basics and encourages the community to embrace natural beauty just as much as loving wigs and weaves. He also voices concerns about the impact of social media on self- esteem. He worries that constant comparisons to curated online images can lead individuals to truly believe there is something wrong with their appearance. “It’s not that there’s something with you; you just need to love and embrace your own individual natural beauty”, he says reminding us all that true beauty begins with self- acceptance.
Working with a diverse range of skin tones and hair textures, Turner emphasizes the importance of adapting his techniques to meet each client’s unique needs. Before applying any products, he takes the time to ask detailed questions about their skin and hair to ensure he provides the best and healthiest experience possible.
Reflecting on his career, Turner shares that one of his proudest moments so far was being recognized and complimented by a reality star, a milestone that reaffirmed his talent. One of his biggest goals is to become a personal hairstylist or makeup artist for a prominent reality star or celebrity influencer. Among his dream clients, Turner names Halle Hailey and GloRilla, expressing his admiration for their influence and style. He is also looking forward to pursuing more collaborations and expanding his network, aiming to increase his exposure and reach a broader audience.
For those pursuing a career in the beauty industry, Turner offers valuable advice: lean on your community, stay open to learning, and always remain teachable. He emphasizes the importance of balancing affordability and charging prices that reflect your worth. “The right clientele will find you”, he says. “Stand firm on your price because if you remain professional and deliver quality work, your clients will continue to return.”
With his passion, talent, and commitment to excellence, Turner is well on his way to becoming a sought- after name in the beauty industry. As he continues to build his name and business, there’s no doubt that his journey is just getting started, and the best is yet to come.
