Tell us a little about your new book:
Morgan: “Zion’s Happy Place” invites children to join Zion on a vibrant journey to discover his unique Happy Place. Through a simple mindfulness breathing technique, readers will learn how to reach their own Happy Place, embracing their emotions as a source of strength and creativity.
What was the inspiration behind writing your book?
Morgan: I would typically meditate in between my movement classes at Millwood Elementary to ground myself after the chaos of dancing and moving with little kids in the mornings. One day, I did not have the opportunity to meditate before class, and I was frazzled. The kids were wired. It was a lot! In a split decision, I turned off the classroom lights to get the children’s attention and told them, “We are going to go to our Happy Place.” I came up with the Happy Place meditation exercise on the spot out of desperation to soothe my heightened nervous system, and it worked like a charm. My students obliged and even enjoyed the meditative music I played to enhance the impromptu experience.
What does your writing process look like? Do you have any specific routines or rituals that help you stay creative?
Morgan: My writing process is very fluid. I don’t tie myself down to a routine or a schedule. I write when I feel called. I carry sticky notes, notepads, and pens in my purses so that I can jot down creative downloads that sporadically hit me throughout the day. I have started writing two other books with two totally different concepts. I have no idea where I am going with them or when they will be complete. I come back to them when my spirit moves me to do so. My writing process is unorthodox, but I respect it.
Do you believe in work-life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?
Morgan: Work-life balance is essential for me. Without it, I am no good for myself or others. I value rest just as much as I value productivity. I enjoy the work that I produce. I make time to move my body through boxing, dancing, and yoga. Silence and meditation are rituals of mine before I begin and end my day. I ensure that I rest properly so that I have enough energy to enthusiastically do it all again.
What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new authors?
Morgan: Simply, start. That’s it. Start without all of the answers. Start without the full concept. Just start, and the answers will be revealed along the way. I have been writing on and off since 2015. I had no idea what it took to become an author, yet I relished the activity of putting pen to paper and ended up meeting the right people at the right time. More ideas flowed to me. As time passed, a newfound sense of confidence built as well. Now, I can confidently say that I am an author. The uncertainty in between makes it a success for me. Start and trust the process.
