Let’s face it if you’re visiting Peru, odds are you’re here for the main event: Machu Picchu! One of the seven wonders of the world, this ancient Inca citadel is a bucket-list destination for adventurers and history buffs alike. But when I say getting there is a journey, I mean it’s a journey. Grab your comfy sneakers, a sense of humor, and a willingness to be wowed (eventually), because Machu Picchu isn’t for the faint of heart or lazy travelers like me.

Lima to Cusco: The Warm-Up

After soaking up four nights of Lima’s vibrant city vibes, we hopped on a quick one-hour flight to Cusco. Simple, right? Oh, but wait there’s more. From Cusco, we embarked on a scenic ride to the charming Spirit of the River Lodge.

Now, this lodge isn’t smack in the middle of town, but that’s kind of the point. It’s closer to Machu Picchu, which is the real reason we’re all here. This place took me by surprise. It’s literally like a mini luxury lodge in the middle of paradise, a total hidden gem. The views? Chef’s kiss. They offer hiking and trekking tours, which I politely declined because, well, cardio.

Ollantaytambo: A Hidden Gem

One of the perks of staying at Spirit of the River Lodge? You’re just 20 minutes away from Ollantaytambo, a quaint little town that doubles as the gateway to Machu Picchu. After  catching the train when coming back, be sure to wander around, explore the cobblestone streets, and grab dinner or snacks. Trust me, you’ll want provisions, because the lodge is a bit off the grid no corner stores here!

The Train + Bus Combo: A Traveler’s Rite of Passage

From Ollantaytambo, you’ll board either PeruRail or IncaRail for a picturesque 1.5-hour train ride to Machu Picchu town (also known as Aguas Calientes). Pro tip: snag a window seat for those jaw-dropping mountain views. Once you arrive, the journey’s not over, oh no! Hop on a 25-minute bus ride up a winding road to the main event. By this point, you’ve earned your Machu Picchu stripes.

Pro Tip: Book a Tour Company

Want to make your life easier? Let a tour company handle the logistics. We went with Machu Picchu Tours, and they made the process seamless. Tickets, transportation, and guides everything was arranged. All we had to do was show up (and even that felt like an accomplishment after all the steps involved).

Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, breaking down the rich history of Machu Picchu with the kind of enthusiasm you wish your high school history teacher had.

The Big Reveal: Machu Picchu

Now, here’s the tea: Machu Picchu, while breathtaking, felt a tad underwhelming for me personally. Maybe it was the buildup or the sheer effort it took to get there. Still, there’s no denying its cultural and historical significance. It’s one of those places you have to visit at least once, even if just to say, “I did it.”

Is the Journey Worth It?

Would I recommend this epic trek to one of the world’s wonders? Absolutely. Would I do it again? That’s debatable. But hey, if you’re in Peru and ready for an adventure that’ll test your endurance and reward you with bragging rights, Machu Picchu is calling your name.

So, what do you think—are you up for the challenge? Let me know if you’d take this journey to the top of the world (and back)!
