Congratulations on Reggae Jerk Hut being recognized as a Top 10 black-owned restaurant by Travel Noire! What did this moment mean for you and your husband?
Marsha: This recognition was an honor for both my husband and me. It validated all the hard work, sleepless nights, and sacrifices we made to bring our vision to life. More importantly, it was a celebration of our roots and culture, showcasing Caribbean flavors on a larger stage. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see our labor of love not only appreciated but also celebrated. It reminds us that when you stay true to your vision, amazing things can happen.
Reggae Jerk Hut is more than just a restaurant; it’s a cultural experience. What has been the most rewarding aspect of building a community-focused business in North Texas?
Marsha: The most rewarding part has been creating a space where people can come together and experience the warmth, vibrancy, and authenticity of Caribbean culture. Seeing families share a meal, friends celebrating milestones, or a first-time visitor fall in love with the food and atmosphere fills my heart with gratitude. It’s not just about the food — it’s about connection, community, and sharing our heritage with others.
What were some unexpected challenges you faced in the early days of launching Reggae Jerk Hut, and how did you overcome them?
Marsha: One of the biggest challenges was adapting to the fast-paced demands of the restaurant industry. My background in legal and real estate work didn’t fully prepare me for the hands-on nature of running a restaurant. I also had to learn how to effectively manage a team while maintaining the consistency and authenticity of our food. Leaning on my problem-solving skills, asking for advice from mentors, and staying flexible allowed me to overcome these hurdles.
Transitioning from legal and real estate work to owning a restaurant is a bold move. What inspired you to take this leap, and how has your past career prepared you for this journey?
Marsha: The inspiration came from my passion for food and my desire to bring a piece of our culture to North Texas. My husband and I wanted to create something that honored our roots while sharing it with others. My background in legal and real estate work taught me discipline, negotiation skills, and project management, which have all been invaluable in building this business from the ground up.
What’s one thing about running a restaurant that people would be surprised to learn?
Marsha: Many people might not realize how much time and effort goes into every single detail. From sourcing quality ingredients to training staff and ensuring the atmosphere aligns with our vision, a lot is happening behind the scenes. It’s a labor of love that requires a relentless commitment to excellence.
What’s one motto or mantra that you live by, both as a mom and a businesswoman?
Marsha: “Why not me?” This simple question has pushed me to dream bigger and take risks I once thought were out of reach. Whether in parenting or business, I’ve learned that with faith, preparation, and perseverance, anything is possible.
Any plans to expand Reggae Jerk Hut in the future? If so, what can you share?
Marsha: We are excited about the growth potential. While I can’t share all the details just yet, I will say that we’re focused on continuing to bring authentic Caribbean cuisine to more communities. Also, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our new breakfast menu this January 2025, which will feature classic Caribbean-inspired morning dishes.
What advice would you give to other mothers who are hesitant to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams because of the demands of parenting?
Marsha: I would tell them to believe in themselves and take it one step at a time. Being a mother equips you with incredible skills — time management, resilience, multitasking — that are directly transferable to running a business. Remember, you don’t have to do it all at once, and it’s okay to ask for help. Your dreams are worth pursuing, and by following them, you’re setting a powerful example for your children.
