Where style meets culture, Young Atlanta hosted its 12th annual exhibition Sunday at Georgia Tech’s Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium. The event’s theme centered around the history of the Negro Baseball League, bringing modern renditions of Black and African history to the forefront while highlighting diverse talent. Young Atlanta is a movement built for the youth, by the youth, uplifting Black talent across art, design, and fashion in metro Atlanta. This event has become a staple in the community, where young creatives come together to put on a show that is not only inspiring but also a monumental moment for everyone involved in the process. From model coaches and designers to models and executive producers, the show showcased the nuanced fashion and creative minds behind the outfits.
Despite the cold and rainy weather, the event went on, and the venue was packed with eager attendees excited for the much-anticipated showcase. Outside the field, vendors with Black-owned clothing brands offered unique items for sale, while a live band performance energized the crowd and set the tone for the evening. Months of training were visible on the runway as the models showed their dedication and passion for the craft.
The night was truly special for all who attended. Watching the youth come together to create such an impactful production was a testament to the power and importance of the organization. HollyAndro, designer and CEO of Young Atlanta, founded the organization at just 19 years old. His passion for supporting young creatives is reflected in the show’s success and the community it continues to build.
“This year I loved the story of the Negro League. With all they had against them, they still did what they had to do, and that’s what I feel like I do with Young Atlanta,” said HollyAndro. “We are here today to create that platform to help people to be seen.”
With over 1,000 tickets sold solely through word of mouth and social media, the event was a success, even without sponsors or major investors. The hard work of the models was not only seen on the runway but also behind the scenes, where they underwent a six-week boot camp, practicing every Sunday.
“This event is 100 percent independent, and we put our own blood, sweat, and tears into Young Atlanta, which makes it very unique,” said HollyAndro.
The overarching message of the evening was clear: If there is no seat for you at the table, create your own. HollyAndro’s vision for Young Atlanta is to provide a platform for emerging designers and creatives. At the end of the show, he highlighted a few standout designers, allowing the audience to help choose the winner for this year’s theme scene. With Young Atlanta, the next generation of designers and innovators will be able to find their seat at the table and pave the way for others to follow.
