Meet April Walker, a globally recognized fashion icon, entrepreneur, creative director, educator, and author. She will be honored with the April Walker Apparel Design Stu/deo at the fifth annual National Black Footwear Forum, hosted by Pensole Lewis College (PLC Detroit), the only design-focused HBCU in partnership with the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA).

“The National Black Footwear Forum has always been a platform for innovation and empowerment,” says Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, founder and president of PLC Detroit. “We are thrilled to pay tribute to April Walker. Opening her Apparel Design Studio reflects her dedication to nurturing the next generation of talent.”

Walker has made a significant mark on the fashion and cultural landscape, garnering recognition from prestigious organizations like Forbes and CFDA, as well as popular podcasts such as Vogue and Drink Champs. Her impact is further highlighted in acclaimed documentaries, including Netflix’s “Ladies First” and NBC’s “So Years Fly.”

Walker played a pivotal role in establishing a multi-billion-dollar streetwear industry. She broke down distribution barriers, achieved millions in sales, and collaborated with legends like Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Wu-Tang Clan. Notably, she designed costumes for Tupac in “Above the Rim” and had Mike Tyson wear Walker Wear in the boxing ring. Fab Five Freddy has even referred to her as the “Coco Chanel of hip-hop urban fashion.”

When discussing her vision for the studio, Walker expressed her hopes for inspiring the next generation of designers. “This studio will foster creativity, encouraging aspiring designers to dream big, embrace faith over fear, and transform their ideas into reality. It will serve as a learning space where success leaves clues, bridging the past with the future and acting as an incubator for innovation.”

April Walker’s mission extends far beyond the realm of fashion. She has been a driving force for change within the urban fashion industry, creating valuable opportunities for people of color through her “each one, teach one” philosophy. The success of numerous brands that have emerged from her program is an indication to her steadfast pledge to community, culture, and social equity.

“As the first woman to establish a brand in urban fashion and streetwear, this dedicated space represents a heartfelt full-circle moment,” Walker states. “It’s a chance to connect the past with the present and inspire future creators about what is possible. This moment underscores the power of vision and the dandelion effect.”

The Black Footwear Forum, hosted by Jenee Osterheldt, will feature dynamic programming that brings together creative professionals, students, executives, and supporters to champion inclusivity and diversity in the industry. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, learn from experts, and explore the latest design trends.

Over 30 major industry brands support the forum, with 2024 sponsors including Bacardi, Coach, Converse, Lululemon, Nike, and Under Armour, among others.

April Walker’s legacy reflects a commitment to generosity and transformative change, dedicated to uplifting and equalizing opportunities for everyone.
