SHEEN: What Inspired you to create “Back to Rhythm and Love: Volume 1”?

KENNY J: The inspiration to create this EP was inspired by my desire to bring my interpretation of love back to the forefront of R&B. With this volume, I wanted to introduce the sound and the message of love.

SHEEN: Your music focuses heavily on empowering women. Why is this message important to you?

KENNY J: I have not found myself being a part of empowering women. As a creative, I must use the gift of music to help facilitate change and growth. Oftentimes, the gifted don’t use their gift to promote change or positivity. I wanted to be a part of change through music; empowering people through positivity.

SHEEN: Can you share your songwriting process for the tracks on this EP?

KENNY J: They say experience is a great teacher. So my songwriting process for this EP was to first write songs that are honest and true from my heart. It came out of my experience.

SHEEN: How have your personal experiences influenced the themes of love and respect in your music?

KENNY J: My personal experiences influenced this record a lot. I wanted women to really know and appreciate their value. Some men won’t lower their guard to express to a woman how much she means which presents a missed opportunity to build her up. I’m blessed to have a platform to express it on a large scale.

SHEEN: What was the significance of releasing “You’re A Woman” on International Women’s Day?

KENNY J: The significance of releasing that song was to empower and scream the appreciation of the woman. At first, it was slated for a woman to perform but I thought it would have a different aroma coming from a male.

SHEEN: Can you elaborate on the conversation with your daughter that inspired “Protect Your Heart”?

KENNY J: Sure, my daughter and I have intense conversations often called “story time”. She wanted some direction on how she should define and interpret a relationship with a young man. Seems the young man didn’t understand the correct way to pursue a relationship with her. I needed to respond as a dad but also as a person with experience. That’s how the song “Protect Your Heart” was inspired.

SHEEN: In your opinion, how does contemporary music fail to address themes of love and respect for women?

KENNY J: For me, contemporary music can have a profound effect on people who listen. What has happened in my opinion is the popularity of honest love music has been replaced with music with less maturity and more dysfunction. The love themes are not as promoted as they used to be. The climate of the chaos of our day has trickled into one of the purest art forms.

SHEEN: How has your musical journey shaped your approach to creating this EP?

KENNY J: My musical journey although differing in genres shaped my approach to this EP by simply being confident in the messages. I’ve never compromised the truth of my heart. It remains honest, positive, and empowering.

SHEEN: Can you give us a sneak peek into what you have planned for future volumes?

KENNY J: A sneak peak…lol!! Well, it’s simply “Love”. The plan is to continue to attack it with an honest perspective of love; with no compromise.

SHEEN: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who want to use their platform to uplift others?

KENNY J: Aspiring musicians, always remember to stay true to yourselves. Honesty with your heart will always guide you in the right direction. Difficult moments arise when you stray from your truth. Take the time to understand your heart.
