Lesley Logan found inspiration in her mother, JE Anderson, a graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills, to establish a poignant scholarship program as a tribute to her mother’s impactful teaching career. This scholarship aims to support first-generation college students pursuing special education degrees, reflecting Logan’s strong dedication to fostering learning and community enrichment.
Reflecting on her late mother’s profound influence, Logan shared, “My mother devoted her life to teaching and advocating for education. Her passion for learning shone through her work in various school districts, including Los Angeles Unified School District, Downey, Pasadena, and Inglewood. She always emphasized the importance of education and giving back, specializing in reading and math while nurturing her students, whom she fondly referred to as ‘at promise’ rather than ‘at risk.’ She earned her Master’s in Education from California State Dominguez Hills. I have vivid memories of accompanying her to classes on weekends during my middle school years, immersing myself in the college atmosphere.”
Inspired by her mother’s lifelong commitment to education, Logan established a scholarship program to assist aspiring first-generation students eager to make a positive impact in the field of special education. “This scholarship welcomes first-generation students wishing to specialize in special education, whether pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies, from across the United States,” highlighted Logan.
In collaboration with Bold.org, Logan introduced the JE Anderson Family College Scholarship, available to eligible college students nationwide. Applicants must be first-generation college students intending to major in special education. The application deadline is October 1, with a fundraising goal of $5,000. Contributions to the scholarship fund are tax-deductible, offering community members a valuable opportunity to contribute to this significant cause.
