June is Oral Health Month. Why is the conversation surrounding oral health so important?
Dr. Asante: Oral health is closely linked to overall health. Poor oral hygiene can contribute to serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and complications during pregnancy. By promoting good oral health practices, these broader health risks can be mitigated. Oral Health Month can draw attention to the disparities in access to dental care. Many communities lack adequate dental services, and raising awareness can spur efforts to improve access for underserved populations.
What are 2-3 tips you can give to those looking to improve their oral health?
Dr. Asante: *Find a dental home. You must be under the care of a dentist. Having a dentist that you see every 3-6 months will help improve your smile. The best approach to taking care of your dental care is being “preventive and proactive.”
*Brush and floss two times a day.
*Invest financially in your oral health. Purchase an electric toothbrush. Find a dentist you can trust and follow their treatment recommendations.
What is your proudest business accomplishment?
Dr. Asante: Opening my own dental practice. Less than 1% of Dental Practice owners are African American.
