The Aycock/Crawford family is working to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for having 7 generations of living family members. It’s very exciting because this record has never been reached by an African-American family as far as records have shown. The oldest member of the family is Alma Williams who will be 103 years old this month with the youngest member being 14 months old. Natonya, from the fourth generation, helped us understand more about the family’s background.
What area is your family originally from?
Natonya: Wayne County, North Carolina is our origin. All of our first, second, and some of the third generations were born there.
What are some unique family traditions that have been passed down in your family?
Natonya: As with many Black families, the migrations north for better lives separated families/generations, but for our family, the value of working hard and holding our heads high despite the adversities is very prevalent. Also, knowing who we are and where we come from is extremely important.
What do you feel is the secret to your family’s longevity?
Natonya: We pay attention to our health. We call on each other in times of need. We support, love, and cherish. We understand the importance of life and how the gift of life is just that, a gift, and it is not to be taken for granted.
What will breaking the Guinness record mean to the family?
Natonya: J. Anthony, my big cousin, gave the best answer and it’s one that will remain quoted: “Having seven living generations in a family can be a truly unique and special experience. It provides a deep sense of connection to one’s ancestry and roots, as well as a profound appreciation for the passage of time and the continuity of life.”-J.Anthony Dickerson
