They say, “The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice” and The Blackening has the juice the comedy, horror, and thriller genres have been missing in film.
Sheen Magazine was on the Scene for The Blackening Movie Screening in Atlanta hosted by Lionsgate and HBCU Buzz. “We Can’t All Die First,” affirms The Blackening—a multi-genre film, featuring seven Melanated friends who decide to do what is considered the unthinkable in the Black community—which is take a friends-cation to an unknown cabin in the woods, unbeknownst to them that there is a vengeful, masked killer running rampant—per usual.
The latest and quite possibly, one of the greatest additions to horror and comedy, was directed by Tim Story—the NAACP nominated director behind the original and sequel of some of our favorite films, such as Barbershop, Think Like A Man, and Ride Along. Girls Trip and Harlem writer—Tracy Oliver, a Black Woman who was recently added to the $100 Million-dollar grossing film club and Emmy nominated writer, comedian, and producer—Dewayne Perkins, who stars in this phenomenal cinematic creation, both penned the film. The story was originally a sketch written by Mr. Perkins that premiered on Comedy Central.
Leah Daniels-Butler—casting director and sister of Academy Award nominated filmmaker Lee Daniels, selected a collection of phenomenal actresses and actors to portray the story on the big screen. The leading women are Grace Byers, who recently welcomed her first baby boy into this world with husband, Trai Byers, alongside Antoinette Robertson, X Mayo and Yvonne Orji. The leading men of the film alongside Dewayne Perkins, are Sinqua Walls, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, and Jay Pharaoh.
Juneteenth is a celebration of Freedom Day—America’s second Independence Day which recognizes June 19, 1865, the day that Union Troops appeared to reveal to more than 250,000 misled and enslaved Diaspora of Africa—also known as the African Americans living in Galveston Bay, Texas, that they were indeed free. The information and action of being freed had been withheld from those misled and stolen Men and Women for two years after President Abraham Lincoln announced it, due to several things, one of them being confederate control.
With all the cookouts, good times and memories that will be created this Juneteenth 2023, be sure to saturate the theatres with all that rich Blackity Blackness and check out, what is surely to become a classic film—The Blackening, in theatres Juneteenth weekend.
