Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson kicked off Billboard’s Women In Music Awards at YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday night to great fanfare from the audience. The crowd cheered so loudly during Brunson’s opening monologue, it prompted her to ask, “Did you see a mouse?”

The Emmy winner made it through, leading to the award show’s first performance of the night by Chartbreaker Award winner Kim Petras. Republic co-president Wendy Goldstein, the executive behind Petras’ signing, presented the star with her award, lauding her for being the first transgender woman honored at the Women in Music Awards.

Canadian producer WondaGurl presented Rosalía with the first-ever Women in Music Producer of the Year Award. The Spanish singer-songwriter thanked her team, family, and God before dedicating the award to future female producers.

“To me, it feels special tonight because this is not usual,” she said on winning the award. “I make my own music, I produce my own songs, and I write my own songs. I want to dedicate this award to all the women who are going to be producers.”

In one of the more heartwarming moments of the show, Doechii’s mom, Celesia Moore, introduced her for her mashup performance of “Persuasive” and “Crazy” and the Rising Star Award.

Other winners include singer and actress Lainey Wilson for the Rule Breaker Award, Ivy Queen for the Icon Award, Sylvia Rhone for Executive of the Year, and TWICE for the Breakthrough Award. Becky G took home the Impact Award, and Lana Del Rey was honored as this year’s Visionary.

Chloe Bailey introduced her friend Latto, who delivered a show-stopping performance of her hit “Lottery.” After being presented with the Powerhouse Award, the singer admitted that she didn’t even prepare a speech. She highlighted previous winners Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat before thanking her female team members.

SZA was presented this year’s Woman of the Year Award by Coi Leray, who was joined via video by Lizzo. After Lizzo sang SZA’s praises, the “Kill Bill” singer thanked her team, her label, her parents, and God. The singer explained to the audience that she wants her life to be more than music and to be open to what God has planned for her.

“You just have to say yes to the possibility,” she concluded her speech. “And thank y’all for saying yes to me.”

SZA’s Woman of the Year Award comes on the heels of the singer’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful SOS album. The project has spent 10 nonconsecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 chart since it debuted in December.
