Moliy is a whole vibe, and she’s here to bless the music industry with her standout voice. With her Ghanian roots, Moliy’s sound is a mixture of Afro-pop, R&B, soul, dancehall, and hip-hop — a genre that she sometimes deems Afro-fusion. It was five years ago when Moliy decided to make her first song… and it’s only been up ever since.

You may have seen or heard Moliy on the viral track “Sad Girlz Luv Money” with Amaarae and Kali Uchis, who’s official music video boasts over 13 million views and counting. But Moliy is here to remind folks she’s her own recording artist with her own vault of bangers. 

Most recently, Moliy unveiled her highly-anticipated new EP titled Honey Doom, following the success of last year’s Wondergirl. Clocking in at 8 tracks, Honey Doom sees Moliy in her most vulnerable state, delivering nothing short of raw storytelling while showcasing personal development as a young woman unpacking love and relationships.

Sheen spoke with Moliy virtually to discuss her new project, her favorite song being “Freak,” beauty go-to’s, fashion, and more!

How have you been the last time we chatted?

A lot’s changed in a way. Obviously, the new project’s out. I’ve been traveling. I’ve been having new features, just a lot of different things.

Where are you traveling?

I’ve been to New York, I’ve been to LA. Recently, I just went to Lagos for the first time. I’ve been wanting to go for so long, so I finally went. I was able to do some PR stuff there, also connect with some artists and influencers. Just say hi, Moliy’s in town! [laughs] 

New EP HoneyDoom out now, how are you feeling? 

Excited. I didn’t know what to expect, like the reactions, but so far I’m really liking what I see and how people are receiving it. Also the kind of content I’m creating is new and exciting.

I see you on TikTok, how’s that going? 

Yeah. [laughs] It’s cool. 

You have a creative eye, I can’t figure it out. 

Right. I mean, maybe it’s because I watch a lot of movies and especially being interested in story telling. I try to put my personality, or something that’ll make people understand the music more. Give it more context. 

One thing you want fans to take away from the project? 

I’m really just making music I enjoy, and having fun with this. I hope everyone finds something they can resonate with. Obviously, I’m trying to reach young women like me who have had different experiences, highs and lows. Me putting in the music, I’m hoping they can resonate with that. 

Do you have a favorite song off of the project?

Mine is “Freak.” It’s been that way since I made “Freak,” that’s been my favorite.

Talk about the importance of that record, I know it was to stop domestic violence towards women.

It’s something we don’t have enough conversations about. I have people close to me that have suffered from that. Me seeing them come out of it and seeing how much better they are, I’d love for other young women everywhere to see that. Life could be so much better, so much better. 

What inspired the music video? 

Wow, a lot of things. I connected with Casey Brooks from New York for this video. She’s also an old Hollywood movie fan. I also told her some of my inspirations were from Michael Jackson, Beyoncé. She wanted to figure out how to tell the story and give it that Hollywood feel. We were trying to basically make a movie.

Best memory from shooting?

Oh wow, definitely the people. Everyone involved. I’ve done a lot of videos, but this one, everyone was present and radiating positive energy. We were on set for 16 hours. From start to finish, I was feeling a good vibe all around. That’s the best feeling. Everyone believed in what was happening.

You had that viral moment with “Sad Girlz Luv Money,” how did that boost your name?

There’s a good amount of times where people have come up to me like “omg, I love you,” from that record.” For sure.

What are your beauty go-to’s?

I love a good colorful-beaming eyeliner. I love blush and a mist, something to moisturize. I usually use a rose water spritz. 

What inspires your fashion?

I like colorful things. I love things that compliment my body, things that make me feel comfortable but confident. I’m not too picky on style, as long as I feel good and look cute. [laughs] 

What do you like to do for fun when you are not doing music? 

I love to play Call of Duty, the mobile game. I’m obsessed, I’ve been playing for years. I like hanging with family, vibing out, just chill things. I’m a very relaxed person. 

I heard people get features off Call of Duty.

Yo, Call of Duty, call me! I’m ready. [laughs]

Where do you see yourself in 5 years ?

Totally living my dreams even more, because currently I’m living my dreams. Things that I’m experiencing now are things that I prayed for, worked for. Right now, I’m living them. As I’m living them, I see new things I’d like. Maybe work with Rihanna, maybe have a feature with Wizkid. Have my own home, a very lovely home where I could live with my whole family. I don’t need much. I just need to be comfortable, I need my family to be good. I need to be constantly making music that excites me and thrills me.
