I am so over cold weather. Spring is less than a month away, and as the climate changes, we can expect our skin to change too. Warm weather with lots of sun can leave our skin deprived of water and cause it to secrete more oil. Therefore, with this in mind, spring cleaning your skin care products should consist of getting rid of the old and welcoming in the new for the season.
I had the opportunity to try out a couple of skin care essentials from Kinship Beauty, and it was well worth it! Created by scientists and industry experts, Kinship is known for its clean, kind-to-skin skincare, so I was excited to add their all-inclusive products to my routine. With plant-based formulas that promote “resilient and easy-glowing skin,” Kinship is dedicated to providing products that are both safe for our skin and planet.
Sustainably and ethically sourced, Kinship combines pure ingredients with vitamins and minerals to heal our skin. Although my skin is not super sensitive, I look for products like these that are gentle, with nourishing ingredients that’ll be good to me. Updating my skincare regimen for the warmer months includes plant-based products from Kinship Beauty, and if you want to give your skin a boost, you should too.
Naked Apple Oil-Free Blemish Control Gel Cleanser, $23
You know what they say: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Rich in Vitamin E and Vitamin C, apples are great for your health, and skin included. Kinship’s Naked Apple Oil-Free Blemish Control Gel Cleanser is formulated with apple extract and other nourishing ingredients like Kinbiome™, Niacinamide, and vegan Lactic Acid to exfoliate, hydrate, balance, and strengthen the skin. I’ve been using this cleanser in the morning and at night to remove makeup, and I love how gentle it is. It removes makeup and oils very well, and after each use, my skin feels super clean and soft. This deep, pore cleansing gel reduces acne and minimizes the appearance of pores, with the help of apple extract that moisturizes for soft, even-toned skin. Plus, it doesn’t leave my face feeling dry or completely stripped of its natural oils.
The packaging is so cute with a bright green bottle that literally brightens up my mornings. And it’s 100% recyclable. Not only that, but the cleanser smells delicious. It’s a refreshing burst of tangy, green apples, which makes the washing experience less mundane and a lot more enjoyable.
The gel turns into a slight foam as you massage it into your skin, and you really only need one or two pumps to cover your whole face. I scrub the gel generously on my chin area where dark spots are present, and my blemishes are noticeably reduced. Coming from a season that tends to leave our skin feeling dry, this cleanser is perfect for balancing the skin. If you have a combination, oily, or acne-prone skin, you should get your hands on this!
Self Reflect Rose Probiotic Moisturizing Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 32, $25
Living in a state that’s cold the majority of the year, and growing up not ever wearing sunscreen, I wouldn’t call myself a sunscreen wearer, and I’m definitely not a sunscreen expert. As a Black woman, I’ve always heard (until more recently) that sunscreen is not needed for those with darker skin tones. Although much less than fair and non-melanated skin, the sun’s UV rays can have an impact on skin with more melanin as well. The Black community is not immune to sun damage on unprotected skin, which can result in spots, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, premature aging, and changes in pigmentation.
I will say, in recent years, I’ve tried sunscreens and day creams with SPF in them, and Kinship’s award-winning Self Reflect Rose Probiotic Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 32 is actually one that I’ll continue to use. Maybe it’s because it doesn’t feel like actual sunscreen? Which is probably part of the reason why it’s a bestseller! It’s lightweight, water-resistant, reef-safe, benzene-free, and not sticky or oily like other sunscreen products. The Self Reflect probiotic moisturizing zinc oxide formula provides UVA/UVB sun protection while improving the appearance of the skin. It also doesn’t have that strong “sunscreen-y” smell, at all. This gentle, mineral sunscreen has notes of rose and is for blemish-prone skin, so it’s safe for skin sensitivities.
Once completely absorbed into the skin, the cream leaves a dewy glow (without putting on any makeup!), it feels soft and most importantly, protected. It’s not necessarily something that I’ll wear every single day, but it’s definitely a summer and vacay must-have for sunshiny days. It never hurts to have a little extra protection!
