Biz Markie will forever go down in history for his timeless smash “Just A Friend,” which has transcended generations even to this day. On Monday, August 2nd, his life, and legacy was celebrated at the Theatre for the Performing Arts in Patchogue, New York, the late emcee’s hometown.
The family began the celebration for “The Clown Prince of Hip Hop” with a private funeral service Monday morning. The public portion featured such guests as Al B. Sure!, Montell Jordan, Cool V, Roxanne Shante, his wife Tara, and daughter Averi (not his biological daughter, referred to as his “bonus” daughter).
Everyone who spoke not only paid their respects but regaled the crowd with stories. Reverend Al Sharpton delivered a touching, and at times comedic, eulogy. “Everybody in this room is here because Biz earned our attendance, because he was always there for us,” Sharpton said.
The icon was displayed in a closed all-black casket adorned with white flowers. It was flanked by a flower display spelling out “BIZ,” along with a live painting demonstration. The artists painted a colorful portrait of Biz throughout the ceremony. Performances by Montell Jordan, Karen Anderson, Mary Brown, and more ensued.
