I was 11-years-old when Missy, Lil’ Kim, Mya, Christina and Pink blessed us with a legendary remake of the 1974 track by LaBelle. In 2001, it was the first single on the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack. I hadn’t seen the movie, but you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t a “bad ass chick from the moulin rouge” when Lil’ Kim came through. Thankfully, me nor my mother knew a lick of French.

The sexually explicit line “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?” translates to ‘Do you want to sleep with me tonight?” in English. I mean, now that I’m older, it’s definitely a feminist anthem. In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan Christina Aguilera shared her thoughts on the masterpiece. “The message was awesome, because every woman wants to feel good in their own skin. Every woman wants to own their sexuality–whether you want to put on a corset or not,” she said. As a 31-year-old I completely agree and the preteen Shauna appreciates the pre-empowerment. Lil Kim’s verse still does something to me, I still try to emulate Christina’s power vocals, and I’m still “about that cake–straight out the gate.” Cha-ching!
