Neo-soul artist Lyndja is carving out her own niche in the music scene through a dynamic blend of R&B, soul and jazz, imbued with the atmospheric intensity of a church worship session. Equal parts singer-songwriter, Lyndja’s honeyed vocals often remain in listeners’ minds for days and her heart wrenching lyrics are often too visceral to forget. With vocals that can range from powerhouse to delicate, Lyndja has forged a unique sound that is reminiscent of the emotional, heart-in-throat vulnerability of Adele mixed with the raw power of Whitney Houston.
Lyndja is determined to subvert the expectations of detractors who may want to place this Haitian-born, full-figured worship leader within a box. “Ministry goes far beyond what happens within church walls. It can be anywhere, and happen in any form”. Through her genre-blending music of neo-soul and contemporary gospel, she not only cuts to the core of her listener’s emotions, but hopes to inspire her listeners to also be unapologetically themselves. Lyndja is currently working on her debut album, and plans to release her first single this year.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, who is Lyndja ? Is there a meaning behind your name?
Lyndja is passionate, regal and soulful. I got my name from my mother “Lyne”. Growing up I always hated having to explain where my name came from or why it was spelled this way but over the years I realized that there was so much beauty in its uniqueness and decided to finally embrace it.
How did you know you were destined to be an artist?
I grew up with music being the only form of entertainment allowed in my house and so when I started having dreams about myself on stage, I knew one of my purposes in life was to sing and make music.
Can you tell us about your journey as a singer/songwriter ?
I started singing at 4 years old: kids choirs, events, weddings, birthday parties, you name it! But listening to power houses like: Celine, Etta, Whitney, Estefan and so on…I really started to fall in love with this powerful way of singing lyrics that came from passionate and authentic stories.
How do you describe your music? And what inspires you to create?
My music is raw, but most importantly a real depiction of love, life and self expression. I write and sing because that’s my way of being seen and understood. I know and understand that my talent and voice come from God, so that’s my ultimate source of inspiration.
Let’s get a little personal: Is Lyndja the artist different from the woman? They coexist very well however, the artist is more raw and vulnerable. Lyndja the woman is more protective of her space.
If you weren’t singing or writing songs, what would you be doing?
If i wasn’t singing or writing, I most definitely would be in the fashion industry. Fashion and style allows me to express myself just like music. There’s nothing like beautiful garments that hug your body perfectly on the outside but make you feel just as beautiful on the inside.
Can you tell us about any upcoming projects?
My single will be out soon and to be followed by the EP. I am also working on other things, but i cannot speak on them yet.
