ADVICE
As a licensed psychotherapist, I’ve seen the effects of the pandemic from a personal perspective, but I’ve also seen it from a professional standpoint. My first suggestion is in order to create a “new” normal, allow yourself to grieve “old” normal. The five stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. This is no step-by-step process. You may begin coping with loss in the bargaining stage and find yourself in anger or depressed next. Be patient with yourself because adjusting to change can be very difficult and takes time. Below are a few additional tips to help create a “new” normal:
• Create a routine. Having a routine can help create some sense of normalcy during time of uncertainty. Be creative and create a schedule that you can stick to, so that you can continue to adapt to these new times.
• Talk about your feelings. Friends and family are great to rely on for emotional support but consider finding a therapist. This isn’t my suggestion because I am one, it’s because I know therapy can be effective. A therapist is can provide insight and direction from a non-biased perspective. (Most insurance companies cover the cost.) Teletherapy can be done at home and can be very effective.
• Practice self-care daily. A few ways I practice self-care are praying, meditating, taking breaks, journaling, using essential oils, resting and unplugging from social media.
• Exercise.
• Evaluate your thoughts.
• Make yourself a priority.
