Its no surprise that there have been many history-making moments during the 2020 Election!

Currently, we’re awaiting the results of the 2020 Presidential Election but while we wait for the votes to be counted, we thought we’d highlight a few of the history-making moments that have happened so far during all the craziness.

This past Tuesday, history was made when a number of wins for the LGBTQ+ community when Sarah McBride because the first openly transgender state senator. In addition, Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones made history as the first openly gay Black men elected to Congress.

Read on as we highlight all the newly elected leaders that are helping shape America’s future.

Cori Bush – After the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown, Cori Bush (a registered nurse) made headlines as she fought against social justice activism. In 2016 and 2018, Bush ran for office and fell short but this year, she came out winning! The new U.S. representative won a seat in Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. This marks history as she became the first Black woman from Missouri to be elected to Congress.

Sarah McBride – National Press Secretary for the Human Rights Organization became the first openly transgender state senator in the election to Delaware’s state Senate.

Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones – History was made in New York! New York City Councilman tweeted thanking voters for his win as the first openly gay Afro-Latino member of Congress. Mondaire Jones – an openly attorney joined him in this historic win after winning in New York’s 17th Congressional District.

Michele Rayner-Goolsby – This Black attorney made history when she became the first openly queer woman elected to Florida’s legislature. Back in August, she won the primary election to represent Florida House District 70.

Iman Jodeh – Community activist and educator, Iran Jodeh became the first Muslim lawmaker in the history of Colorado when she was elected to the state’s House of Representatives in District 41.

Jabari Brisport – Public school teacher, Jabari Brisport became the first Black openly gay member of the New York State Legislature when he won the election for New York’s 25th State Senate District.

Kim Jackson – Episcopal priest, Kim Jackson made history when she was elected as Georgia’s first openly LGBTQ state senator!
