From a hobby to a passion project, Oyemwen has found her calling in fashion.
Ever since she was a little girl in Nigeria, fashion designer Oyemwen had an eye for fashion and style. The designer had a conversation with SHEEN about her journey to becoming a designer, her fashion sense, and the next steps to achieving her vision. Although Oyemwen thought the medical profession was where she belonged, little did she know fashion and design was where her passion lies.
When did you decide that you wanted to become a fashion designer?
I always had an affinity for fashion. My parents are merchants in Nigeria. I am the youngest of five girls, so there were always clothes flying around. My mom’s business is textiles, so she imports and exports fabric.
It wasn’t until I experienced difficulty getting into med school as an international student. The spots are limited and very competitive [that I thought differently]. It took me awhile to see that maybe God is pushing me in another direction. I eventually decided to go into retail and being of service to people.
