2019 film Joker dominated the list of Oscar nominations announced this past Monday. The film landed 11 nominations including Best Actor, Best Director and Best Picture. This marks a new record for a comic-book movie and marks the first Best Picture nomination for a DC Comics-derived film. Many comic book fans we’re excited about the nominations but unfortunately, everyone wasn’t so thrilled.
Oscars still can do a bit better when it comes to diversity many fans express on social media. For the second year in a row, we all couldn’t help but notice there were no women nominated in the Best Director category: Nominees included Martin Scorsese, Bong Joon-ho, Quentin Tarantino, Sam Mendes, and Todd Phillips, with the notable snub of Gerwig. Hopefully, we see more diversity next year in the best director category.
The Academy Awards will air Sunday, February 9th, on ABC.
