HBO’s The Wire was one of those shows that we watched from beginning to end, making us familiar with Wood Harris as an actor. In the action movie Dredd 3D, Harris plays a gang member in the future. Just when we thought we could only love him as the bad guy, he has taken on the role as Malcolm X in the upcoming film Betty and Coretta.
Sheen: Tell us about your character in Dredd.
Wood Harris: I play “Case” in Dredd 3D.The move took six months to film and it was shot in Africa. He is a member of the gang the Mama Clan. There are mega structures in the future, which are residents that are a block tall. The Mama Clan has taken over the mega block. The gang pushes a drug on the people called Slow-Mo.
Sheen: Was it fun doing an action movie?
WH: A lot of the fun was from being in Africa for six months. After work, I was able to assimilate into the culture. I was even able to fly my mother out and my kids out. It was wonderful.
Sheen: You have been married 10 years. How do have you been able to make you marriage last?
WH: You wake up with that person, love that person, and you just don’t leave that person. You stay committed growing.
Sheen: What do you tell your children about relationships?
WH: They are very young. I don’t want my kids to be in relationships. I want them to be fertile people before they get into relationships. I want them to fall for other things so they are not easily swayed by other people.
Sheen: What is next after next after Dredd?
WH: I leave for Montreal for Betty and Coretta. I am going to portray Malcolm X. I think I will do a surprisingly good job as Malcolm X. I’ve met Angela Bassett, who will be playing Coretta Scott King and Mary J Blige who will be playing Betty Shabazz. I am excited about this film.
